5 Minutes with Michael Free

Mike Free has been a part of the fabric of Mount Martha all his life.  Together with his late Father Reg, who settled here in 1928, Mike constructed over 200 tennis courts in postcode 3934.  Born at ‘The Bush’ in Mornington and one of four generations to have been schooled at Osborne Primary, makes Mike a true ‘local’.

What do you like about Mount Martha?

Country living with a seaside atmosphere.  We have the best beaches on the Peninsula.

What do you think is the attraction for people moving to Mount Martha?

Lifestyle.  There are good quality schools, we can buy fresh local produce at a variety of shops and farm gate outlets.

Would you like to see more facilities within the Village?

No!  The Village has everything we need and is busy enough!

What advice do you give to new residents?

Join in your community.  People in small towns tend to look after each other.  I was a CFA volunteer for over 25 years and played my part in helping others.  Now it’s your turn – get involved in Clubs with your kids.

Is there a secret about Mount Martha you would like to share?

The Brim in Balcombe Creek and Estuary are still there!

What are the biggest changes you have witnessed?

Nowadays I can walk around the village and will not see anyone I know!  That’s sad.
